Cathie Wood's decision to sell more than 1 million shares of Nvidia came as the stock rocketed to astronomical highs. Ark Invest has missed out on more than $1 billion in returns by selling Nvidia stock too early. Ark Invest sold 859,000 Nvidia shares in the fourth quarter of 2022, when the stock was trading below $150 per share. In the first quarter of 2024, ARK Invest continued to pare down its Nvidia stake, selling 81,239 shares. ARK Invest has redeployed its proceeds from selling Nvidia stock into other potential AI companies, though few of those investments have panned out.

With scientists predicting yet another active year for storms, making your home hurricane resistant has become a more valuable precaution. "Already, we are seeing storms move across the country that can bring additional hazards like tornadoes, flooding and hail," he said. A separate forecast from hurricane researchers at Colorado State University predicts an "extremely active" hurricane season in 2024 due to record-warm tropical and eastern subtropical Atlantic sea surface temperatures. If installing new hurricane windows isn't in the budget, shutters are lower-cost options to protect windows and other openings, said Chapman-Henderson. “Our research approach is community science,” Lohi, who was corresponding author on the study, told CNN. Researchers dubbed the cats' unusual coat coloring as salmiak, or “salty licorice,” after a popular Finnish candy. Now that salty licorice cats are officially a thing, could they become the next designer breed? “It is possible that breeders will choose to develop a population of salty licorice cats,” Lohi said. “However, the health of the salty licorice cats should be followed in more detail to confirm the absence of any color-related health issues.” Tailored genetic testing could be used to ensure the cats are bred without passing on dangerous genes.

With that in mind, the researchers decided to test out how effective the leftover mushroom substrate could be in removing contaminating substances from water. A 2023 report by the European Union's lending arm, the European Investment Bank (EIB), highlighted that conventional wastewater treatment methods do not fully remove micropollutants. In April, EU lawmakers approved new measures for urban wastewater treatment. In New Zealand, researchers have used fungi to treat soil contaminated by the pesticide PCP. "For example, integrating an extra treatment step into an existing wastewater treatment system requires an upfront investment to change the existing infrastructure," she said.

CNN —Jeep, widely known for making rugged off-road vehicles, has unveiled its first fully electric SUV for the North American market. The Wagoneer S will test the appetite of Jeep customers for a fully electric model. It comes at a time of waning interest in electric vehicles, even as regulatory requirements for them become more stringent. The new Wagoneer S has a sleeker, more aerodynamic shape than the Jeep Wagoneer models sold today. Jeep is working on putting the Wagoneer S Trailhawk into production, Filosa said in an interview with CNN.

Outdoor furniture FAQsWhat are common materials for outdoor furniture? Wicker, eucalyptus, and bamboo are more natural-looking materials, while plastic and synthetic resin are typically considered cheaper outdoor furniture materials. You could invest in outdoor furniture covers or tarps that fully cover the outdoor pieces. You will find more outdoor furniture options and new styles available at the end of spring and the beginning of summer. Apple CEO Tim Cook disputed third-party reports that iPhone sales in the country were struggling in Apple's most recent earnings call, telling investors that sales of Apple's smartphone grew in mainland China during the first quarter. Despite these challenges, China remains a crucial market for Apple. "We feel that the Chinese manufacturers are waged in extremely intense competition between themselves, but that won't necessarily move the needle against Apple," Wood said.

In a warehouse off Lyndon B. Johnson Freeway in an industrial area outside Dallas, the future of American military ammunition production is coming online. Here, in the Pentagon’s first new major arms plant built since Russia invaded Ukraine, Turkish workers in orange hard hats are busy unpacking wood crates stenciled with the name Repkon, a defense company based in Istanbul, and assembling computer-controlled robots and lathes. The factory will soon turn out about 30,000 steel shells every month for the 155-millimeter howitzers that have become crucial to Kyiv’s war effort. Ukraine fired between 4,000 and 7,000 such shells daily for several months in 2023, according to NATO’s secretary-general, before infighting among House Republicans held up further funding for Pentagon arms shipments. Large shipments of American artillery ammunition resumed in April after Congress passed an aid package that included $61 billion to Ukraine.

James Wood’s mother struggled with addiction, and he often found himself adrift, not knowing what day or month it was. When James was 14, his mother died of pneumonia, and he entered California’s foster care system. As a minor with a deceased parent and a disability, James was entitled to federal benefits, totaling $780 a month, some of which his mother had accrued during the years that she worked as a nurse. The government got the money instead, according to James and his adoptive father, Wayne Stidham. It’s a longstanding practice for many states or counties to apply for the federal benefits of foster children, often without their knowledge, and then use the money to cover some of the costs of their care, according to legal advocates for children and congressional researchers.

Ark Invest CEO Cathie Wood believes stocks are ready to spring upward with easing price pressures and lower interest rates on the horizon. "In the fourth quarter, as the Fed's dot plot began pointing to much lower interest rates, the bull market in equities broadened dramatically," Wood said in an X post on Thursday evening. In our view, more price deflation and lower interest rates will activate coiled equities." She said investors have been flocking to safe havens and cash at a dramatic pace last seen during the 1930s. "In our view, the search for cash and safety in the equity markets today is as intense as that during the Great Depression in the early 1930s," Wood said in the X post.

They’re dirt-dwelling invertebrates, but, in a sense, they’re the real backbone of Earth’s carbon cycle. Thousands of species of mites and springtails, living in soil all around the world, provide a crucial service by munching organic matter like fallen leaves and wood, transferring its planet-warming carbon into the ground and releasing nutrients that help new plants grow. But now, a new analysis that combined data from 38 different studies on the organisms suggests that drought in some parts of the world, often supercharged by climate change, are killing them off at alarming rates. “It is important to take care of these critters in particular because we know so little about them,” said Ina Schaefer, a soil invertebrate ecology researcher at the University of Göttingen in Germany.

CNN —Hundreds of mammoth bones have been uncovered in an Austrian wine cellar, in a discovery labelled an “archaeological sensation.”The remains are thought to be between 30,000 and 40,000 years old, according to experts. Andreas Pernerstorfer made the incredible discovery while renovating his wine cellar in the village of Gobelsburg, about 70 kilometers (43 miles) northwest of Vienna, in March. “He wanted to level the floor of his wine cellar because it was sloping and he removed some concrete in the center,” she said. “It quickly became apparent that it wasn’t just a few mammoth bones but very many mammoth bones,” she said. More than 300 densely packed bones were discovered, though there are likely to be considerably more buried beneath the cellar.
